The Republicans ((フランス語:Les Républicains); LR) is a centre-right political party in France. The Republicans was formed on 30 May 2015 as a rebranding of and successor to the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) founded by former President Jacques Chirac.〔http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/05/29/us-france-sarkozy-idUSKBN0OE2J120150529〕 The party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in France along with the centre-left Socialist Party (PS).
The leader of the Republicans, Nicolas Sarkozy, was President of France between 2007 and 2012, until his defeat by PS candidate François Hollande in the 2012 presidential election.
